After Battle Abbey we stopped briefly at the ruins of Pevensey Castle, famously the place where William the Conqueror landed in 1066 to begin the Norman Conquest of England.The castle survived multiple sieges throughout the medieval period and was used as a prison in the 15th century. It was even used as a defensive position during the Second World War, with machine-gun posts camouflaged into its walls.
