The artist’s monogram “AD” and a Latin inscription are included in the painting, which translates to “I, Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg, portrayed myself in everlasting colors aged twenty-eight years”, probably so people wouldn’t think it was a painting of Jesus Christ.
