Back at sea level in the town of Porto Moniz we stopped at the natural swimming pools there. The pools are naturally formed from volcanic lava that flowed into the sea and cooled. They are filled with clear Atlantic seawater, which is cyclically renewed by the ocean waves. Had it been a warmer time of the year they would have been filled with people swimming in them.
