Next we stopped by the ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey. It was founded in AD 598 by St Augustine, it was the first monastery in Anglo-Saxon England and is considered the birthplace of Christianity in England. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538, after which most of its library was taken and parts were sold off.
