While in Orvieto we took a tour of Underground Orvieto. There tunnels and rooms all through the volcanic uplift that Orvieto sits on that are over 2500 years old. This is a room on the edge of the uplift with a hole on the left so pigeons can enter and nest in the little cubby-holes in the wall (where the term “pigeon hole” came from?). The purpose was to raise pigeons for food.
