Next we went for a walk through what’s called the Jewish Ghetto or Jewish Quarter. It’s an area where Rome’s Jewish population was forced into overcrowded conditions and their rights were limited for over 300 years until the walls were torn down in 1870. Embedded in the pavement in places are these brass plaques that are engraved with a victim’s name, dates of birth and death, and deportation details. They are placed in front of the last known address where the victim lived before being rounded up and sent to a Nazi extermination camp.
