While walking the Jewish Quarter we came across the famous Turtle Fountain (Fontana delle Tartarughe) which was built originally in the late 1500s as part of the Roman public water system. The turtles were not part of the original design, they were added about 1658. It’s not known who did the turtles for the fountain but speculation is they were done by Bernini, and that since they are so realistic he made them from casts of real turtles. In 1853–54, during a brief period of puritanism in Rome, leaves were placed over the sexual organs of the boys.
